Life#
Born in Çorlu in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Mehmet İzzet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Çorlu in 1878, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Mehmet İzzet as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru) in Lüleburgaz. From 1881 to 1907 the annual entries place Mehmet İzzet in Çorlu, the birthplace, first as Nakliye Memuru, from 1886/87 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 600 in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Çorlu, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 27 years of salary come to 139,440 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
