Life#
Arnest Lapir Efendi was born in Rhodes (Rodos) in 1861/62 (AH 1278) into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Arnest Lapir also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Arnest Lapir began work in Izmir (İzmir) in 1878, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Arnest Lapir in Izmir as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1884/85. Arnest Lapir then moved to Çanakkale in 1885/86, then back to Izmir from 1891 to 1898. The lists have no entry for 1886 to 1891. The last post was in Vlorë (Avlonya) in 1898/99.
Pay rose from 190 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 500 in 1898/99, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Vlorë, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
