Life#
Born in Mytilene (Midilli) in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nuri Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet Nuri began work in Mytilene in 1877/78, at about 23, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Mehmet Nuri in Izmir (İzmir) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Nuri then moved to Edirne from 1881 to 1886, then Hayrabolu from 1886 to 1893. Next came Köyceğiz from 1893 to 1901, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür), then Ayvalık from 1901 to 1904. The last posts were in Mytilene, the birthplace, from 1904 to 1907, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 720 in 1904/05, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Mytilene, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 27 years of salary come to 160,620 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
