Life#
İbrahim Ali Efendi was born in Mytilene (Midilli) in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
İbrahim Ali began work in Aydın in 1868/69, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with İbrahim Ali as an official (Memur) in Istanbul. İbrahim Ali then moved to six places in 11 years, from Aydın to Enez (İnoz), with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1874/75, then Burdur from 1884 to 1891. From 1891 to 1902 every annual entry places İbrahim Ali in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Eight provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to a peak of 800 in 1891/92, as 2. Müdür in Afyonkarahisar, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 190,800 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
