Life#
Born in Tekirdağ in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Şekip Feyzi Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Şekip Feyzi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Eregli in 1877/78, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Şekip Feyzi as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) in Konya, where the entries run to 1888/89, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1884/85. Şekip Feyzi then moved to Yalvaç, Eğirdir and Burdur from 1889 to 1896, then Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) from 1896 to 1902, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1900/01. The last posts were in Pisan from 1903 to 1905 and Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1906/07.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 1,000 in 1900/01, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Afyonkarahisar, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 132,060 kuruş, 85 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
