Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Tekirdağ in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ali Rıza began work in Erzurum in 1882/83, at about 14, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for ten years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Ali Rıza in Erzincan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1893 to 1907 every annual entry places Ali Rıza in Istanbul, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1898/99 as Huk Memuru and from 1906/07 in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1892/93, as Muhabere Memuru in Erzincan, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 100 kuruş. Over 15 years pay ended below where it began, 320 kuruş against 400; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
