Life#
Hasan Behçet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Behçet also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hasan Behçet began work in Bilecik in 1887/88, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Hasan Behçet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Geyve. Next came Bilecik, Ankara, Serres (Siroz), Cemile and Yozgat, five places in ten years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1899/1900. The last posts were in Ankara again from 1903 to 1906. Cemile, about 3,350 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 37 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 1,200 in 1899/1900, as 2. Müdür in Cemile, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 540 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1905/06; the list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
