Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Ohannes Murat Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa).
Ohannes Murat began work in Konya in 1877/78, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Ohannes Murat as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ilgın. Next came Konya from 1882 to 1894, then Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1894 to 1900. The last posts were in Lenhori from 1900 to 1903, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 540 in 1900/01, as 3. Müdür in Lenhori, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 108,240 kuruş, 78 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
