Life#
Born in Rhodes (Rodos) in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Work began in Rhodes in 1884/85, at about 13, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for nine years or longer. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Ali Rıza in Aydın as a postal official (Posta Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ali Rıza to Symi (Sömbeki) from 1894 to 1901. The last post was in Lirpos in 1901/02.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1893/94, as Posta Memuru in Aydın, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
