Life#
Cemil Efendi was born in Edirne in 1872/73 (AH 1289), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Cemil began work in Vize in 1891/92, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Cemil as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aydogmus. Next came Kıyıköy (Midye), Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) and Uzunköprü (Cisr-i Ergene) from 1896 to 1900. The last post was in Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç) in 1900/01.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 475 in 1896/97, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kıyıköy, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
