Life#
Born in Bosna in 1872/73 (AH 1289), İbrahim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
İbrahim began work in Basra in 1882/83, at about 11, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 11 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places İbrahim in Basra as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Kemuniye from 1904 to 1906, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru). Basra, about 2,950 km from Bosna, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 800 in 1904/05, as Merkez Memuru in Kemuniye, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
