Life#
Born in Bosna in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Sabri Efendi was the child of an army major (binbaşı). At about 13, in 1887/88, Mustafa Sabri began work in Louros (Loros), with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mustafa Sabri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya). Next came Elassona (Alasonya) from 1898 to 1903. The last posts were in Kozani (Kozana) from 1903 to 1908.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 500 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Kozani, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Bosna doğumlu memurlar" by MEHMET AKGÜN (2017) probably refers to Mustafa Sabri, since the name and the birthplace agree. Mustafa Sabri probably has an entry in "II. Abdülhamid Dönemi Bosna-Hersekli devlet adamları" by DİLEK AKDEMİR (2018) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
