Life#
Born in Gjirokastër (Ergiri) in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Zeynelabidin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Zeynelabidin also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Zeynelabidin began work in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1896/97, at about 22, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Zeynelabidin in Ioannina as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Delvine from 1898 to 1901, then a return to Gjirokastër, the birthplace, from 1901 to 1903. The annual lists then follow Zeynelabidin back to Ioannina from 1903 to 1906, with a rise to Basmudur Baskitabeti. The last posts were in Ankara from 1906 to 1909 and Kastamonu in 1909/10.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 1,500 in 1909/10, the peak, as Müfettiş in Kastamonu, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
