Life#
Hacı Bayram Efendi was born in Gjirokastër (Ergiri) in 1870/71 (AH 1287), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Bayram also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.
Bayram began work in Mitrovica (Mitroviça) in 1891/92, at about 21, paid from the start, on 142 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Bayram as Muvassil in Mitrovica. Next came Gjirokastër in 1892/93, then Vlorë (Avlonya) from 1893 to 1899, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1896/97. Bayram then moved to Serres in 1899/1900, then back to Gjirokastër from 1900 to 1904. The last posts were in Preveza in 1904/05 and Leskovik in 1905/06.
The salary went from 142 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 300 in 1896/97, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Vlorë, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 43,008 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
