Life#
Born in Van in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, this official was the child of an official of the civil administration (mülkiye memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1879/80, the official began work in Diyarbakır, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with the official as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) in Diyarbakır, where the entries run to 1882/83. Next came Elazığ in 1883/84 and Cizre in 1884/85, then Eskişehir from 1885 to 1892. The official then moved to Arapgir, Malatya and Zara from 1892 to 1898. From 1898 to 1911 the annual entries place the official in Ioannina (Yanya), first as a central office official (Merkez Memuru), from 1910/11 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 1,000 in 1910/11, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Ioannina, when three in four paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 191,280 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1911.
