Life#
Mardiros Efendi was born in Van in 1863/64 (AH 1280), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Mardiros also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
Work began in Van in 1901/02, at about 38, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Only 49 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 38 or older. Both annual entries, for 1901/02 and 1902/03, place Mardiros in Van, the birthplace, in the Tercume Odasi.
