Life

Born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 32, in 1897/98, İsmail Hakkı began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 32 or older. Both annual entries, for 1901/02 and 1902/03, place İsmail Hakkı in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi).

The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 150 in 1902/03, the peak, in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Istanbul, when 5 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
