Life#
İsak Marbut Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); İsak Marbut also wrote French as well as Turkish.
İsak Marbut began work in Istanbul in 1901/02, at about 24, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with İsak Marbut as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1904/05. The last posts were in Aydın from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Aydın, when half the paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 16,800 kuruş, 49 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
