Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Kemaleddin Efendi was the child of a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Mehmet Kemaleddin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1898/99, Mehmet Kemaleddin began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1901/02 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Kemaleddin in the same office, office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Istanbul, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 6,000 kuruş, 20 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
