Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Münim Efendi was the child of a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1891/92, Ahmet Münim began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Ahmet Münim as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Üsküdar, where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Bursa in 1900/01 and Beyoğlu in 1901/02 and Üsküdar again from 1902 to 1904.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 400 in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Bursa, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 100 kuruş. Over nine years the salaries add up to 15,000 kuruş, 27 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
