Life#
Hacı Ali Recai Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ali Recai also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 11, in 1887/88, Ali Recai began work in Trabzon, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 2 per cent started at 11 or younger. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. Both annual entries, for 1895/96 and 1896/97, place Ali Recai in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 100 in 1896/97, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
