Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Tahsin Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Trabzon in 1896/97, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 450 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1900/01 to 1905/06 places Hüseyin Tahsin in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Sinop.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 450 kuruş a month in 1900/01, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Sinop, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
