Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Mehmet Avni Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Mehmet Avni had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 36, in 1902/03, Mehmet Avni began work in Sinop, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 36 or older. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with Mehmet Avni as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) in Sinop, where the entries run to 1906/07. The last post was in Konya in 1907/08, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
