Life

Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 29, in 1896/97, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 5 per cent started at 29 or older. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Kadıköy as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Haydarpaşa in 1898/99, as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru) and Istanbul in 1899/1900.

Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 400 in 1898/99, as Nakliye Memuru in Haydarpaşa, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl Defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde Eğinli (Kemaliyeli) Devlet adamları ..." by ÖMER FERİT İMLAK (2012) probably refers to Hüseyin Hüsnü, since the name and the birthplace agree.
