Life#
Mehmet Cemal Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 28, in 1887/88, Mehmet Cemal began work in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 125 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mehmet Cemal as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kadıköy, where the entries run to 1901/02. The last posts were in Erenköy from 1902 to 1906, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1904/05.
The salary went from 125 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 500 in 1904/05, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Erenköy, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less.
