Life#
Born in Arapgir in 1859/60 (AH 1276), Ömer Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Ömer had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Armenian.
Work began in Kozani (Kozana) in 1892/93, at about 33, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 33 or older. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Ömer as a sergeant (Çavuş) in Kozan. Next came Tarsus in 1893/94 and Adana in 1894/95, then Silifke from 1895 to 1900. In 1900/01 the lists place Ömer in Pozantı.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 400 in 1895/96, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Silifke, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over nine years the salaries add up to 39,000 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
