Life#
İbrahim Vahi Efendi was born in Crete (Girit) in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Vahi also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic and Greek (Rum).
The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places İbrahim Vahi in Crete, the birthplace, as a policeman (Polis), where the entries run to 1894/95, with a rise to 2. Hapishane Muduru in 1894/95. İbrahim Vahi then moved to Istanbul and Üsküdar from 1895 to 1898. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1898 to 1902, with a rise to chief police commissioner (Başkomiser).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 900 in 1898/99, the peak, as Başkomiser in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
