Life#
Born in Konya in 1859/60 (AH 1276), İsmail Sabri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 23, in 1882/83, İsmail Sabri began work in Konya, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places İsmail Sabri in Konya, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). İsmail Sabri then moved to Manavgat, Ilgın and Karaman from 1886 to 1893, then back to Konya from 1893 to 1904. The last posts were in Manavgat again from 1904 to 1906. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 400 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Manavgat, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less.
