Born in Konya in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, Haralambos Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Antalya in 1891/92, at about 28, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş.
