Life#
Mustafa Hilmi Efendi was born in Konya in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa Hilmi began work in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 25, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mustafa Hilmi in Rumelihisarı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Emirgan in 1892/93. From 1893 to 1906 every annual entry places Mustafa Hilmi in Edirne, first as Nakliye Memuru, from 1896/97 as Muhabere Memuru, from 1897/98 as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru) and from 1901/02 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 600 in 1902/03, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Edirne, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
