Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Efendi was the child of an imam. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 28, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Ahmet as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Maltepe. Ahmet then moved to Yemen from 1893 to 1898, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then back to Trabzon, the birthplace, from 1898 to 1903. The last posts were in Medina (Medine) from 1904 to 1906. Yemen, about 2,900 km from Trabzon, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 800 in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Medina, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
