Life#
Ahmed İzzet Efendi was born in Karnobat (Karinabad) in 1863/64 (AH 1280), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Mulkiye Muduru". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmed İzzet began work in Eregli in 1877/78, at about 14, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places Ahmed İzzet in Araç as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1886/87. Ahmed İzzet then moved to Edremit from 1888 to 1894. The last posts were in Ayvalık from 1894 to 1897.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, as Muhabere Memuru in Ayvalık, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1896/97, the list of 1897/98 (AH 1315) gives the status word Vefat (death).
