Life#
Muhittin Rumi Efendi was born in Edremit in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a muezzin. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Muhittin Rumi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1875/76, Muhittin Rumi began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Edremit, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Muhittin Rumi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Svishtov (Ziştovi). The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1880. From 1880 to 1893 the annual entries place Muhittin Rumi in Edremit, the birthplace, first as Tutun Fabrika Memuru, from 1881/82 as Duyunu Umumiye Memuru.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 650 in 1892/93, as Duyunu Umumiye Memuru in Edremit, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 62,040 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1892/93.
