Life#
Born in Prizren in 1859/60 (AH 1276), Hasan Ruhi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Hasan Ruhi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1876/77, Hasan Ruhi began work in Prizren, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1877/78, to 1887/88, every annual entry places Hasan Ruhi in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Shkodër (İşkodra).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 500 in 1878, as Muhabere Memuru in Shkodër, when one in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1887/88.
