Life#
Born in Karnobat (Karinabad) in 1885/86 (AH 1303) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ali began work in Erenköy in 1901/02, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1905/06 places Ali in Erenköy, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1904/05 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Erenköy, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 7,200 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
