Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1891/92, Ali Rıza began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Ali Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Damascus (Şam). Ali Rıza then moved to Hama, Kumanovo (Kumanova), Beynel haremeyn and Eskişehir, four places in eight years. The last posts were in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) from 1904 to 1906, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 800 in 1900/01, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beynel haremeyn, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
