Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 26, in 1891/92, the official began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places the official in Yemen as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98. The last posts were in Çanakkale and Ankara from 1898 to 1903 and Yemen again in 1903/04. Yemen, about 3,200 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 750 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 1,000 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
