Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsamettin Efendi was the child of a steward (kethüda). Hüseyin Hüsamettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Hüseyin Hüsamettin in Ankara as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hüseyin Hüsamettin then moved to İskilip in 1894/95, then Yemen from 1895 to 1900. The last post was in Bajil (Bacil) in 1900/01, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Yemen, about 3,200 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 1,200 in 1900/01, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Bajil, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
