Life#
Mehmet Zeki Efendi was born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 22, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Mehmet Zeki as Tatar in Yemen, where the entries run to 1900/01. Mehmet Zeki then moved to Mosul (Musul) from 1902 to 1904. The last posts were in Bitola (Manastır) from 1904 to 1909. Yemen, about 2,700 km from Kemaliye, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 800 in 1899/1900, as Tatar in Yemen, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
