Life#
Born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Osman Nuri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Osman Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1887/88, Osman Nuri began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Osman Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beirut (Beyrut), where the entries run to 1892/93. Osman Nuri then moved to Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) from 1893 to 1903. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1903 to 1905, with a rise to official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru).
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 600 in 1903/04, the peak, as İttihat Posta Memuru in Thessaloniki, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
