Life#
Mustafa Bayezid Efendi was born in Bilan in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Bayezid also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mustafa Bayezid began work in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) in 1890/91, at about 12, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Mustafa Bayezid in Kahramanmaraş as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last post was in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1906/07, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
