Life#
Born in Bilan in 1878 (AH 1295), Mehmed Bahaeddin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmed Bahaeddin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in İskenderun in 1893/94, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Mehmed Bahaeddin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Birecik, where the entries run to 1901/02. The last posts were in Belen from 1902 to 1906.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 480 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Belen, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
