Life#
Ahmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Ohrid (Ohri) in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Hamdi also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Bulgarian and Greek (Rum).
Ahmet Hamdi began work in Ohrid in 1892/93, at about 22, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Ahmet Hamdi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Elassona (Alasonya), where the entries run to 1898/99. The last posts were in Tetovo (Kalkandelen) and Minokofca from 1899 to 1903 and Zarulhamra in 1904/05, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1901/02.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 800 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Zarulhamra, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05. An entry in "II. Abdülhamid döneminde sicill-i ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Osmanlı Devleti'nde Ohri ..." by ÖMER ÖĞÜT (2026) probably refers to Ahmet Hamdi, since the name and the birthplace agree.
