Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Work began in Istanbul in 1876/77, at about 14, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Ali Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kozani (Kozana). Ali Rıza then moved to Eskişehir in 1884/85, then Istanbul from 1885 to 1906, with a rise to official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru) in 1887/88 and to chief official (Başmemur) in 1888/89. The last posts were in Sirte and Erbil from 1906 to 1911 and Sokna in 1911/12. Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. The farthest post, Sokna, lay about 2,550 km from Trabzon, and fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 1,435 in 1895/96, as Başmemur in Istanbul, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 1,290 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1911/12.
