Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279), İsmail Hakkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1878/79, İsmail Hakkı began work in Sapanca, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with İsmail Hakkı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Izmir (İzmir), where the entries run to 1890/91. The last post was in Menemen in 1891/92, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 500 in 1891/92, as 3. Müdür in Menemen, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1891/92.
