Life#
Mustafa Asim Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa Asim began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Çankırı in 1878/79, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 180 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Mustafa Asim in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi) in Araç. Next came Çankırı in 1884/85, then Düzce from 1888 to 1894. The lists have no entry for 1885 to 1888. Mustafa Asim then moved to Elazığ from 1894 to 1900, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Erzincan in 1900/01 and Bursa in 1901/02 and Mustafakemalpaşa (Kirmasti) from 1902 to 1904.
Pay rose from 180 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 640 in 1902/03, as 3. Müdür in Mustafakemalpaşa, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
