Life#
Born in Rethymno (Resmo) in 1873/74 (AH 1290), Ethem Muzaffer Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ethem Muzaffer had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in the Nufus Kalemi in Kıyıköy (Midye) in 1888/89, at about 16, paid from the start, on 125 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Ethem Muzaffer in the Nufus Kalemi in Kıyıköy. For 1889 to 1892 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Trabzon and Mytilene (Midilli) from 1892 to 1896 and Izmir (İzmir) from 1896 to 1898.
Pay rose from 125 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 500 in 1897/98, as Muhabere Memuru in Izmir, when half the paid officials earned less.
