Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Rıfat Efendi was the child of an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Ünye in 1888/89, at about 16, paid from the start, on 140 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mehmet Rıfat in Ünye as Musillik, where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came Trabzon in 1892/93, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), and Rize in 1893/94, then a return to Ünye from 1894 to 1906. The last post was in Ardeşen in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 140 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 500 in 1906/07, as 3. Müdür in Ardeşen, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
