Life#
Emin Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1872/73 (AH 1289), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Emin began work in Kastamonu in 1888/89, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Emin as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru) in Heraklion (Kandiye). Next came Izmir (İzmir) from 1892 to 1896. From 1896 to 1906 the annual entries place Emin in Kastamonu, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1891/92, as İttihat Posta Memuru in Heraklion, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 275 kuruş. After 15 years the salary stood below the first, 475 kuruş against 500; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
