Life#
Cemal Abdullah Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Cemal Abdullah also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 18, in 1890/91, Cemal Abdullah began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Cemal Abdullah as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Heybeliada. From 1892 to 1906 the annual entries place Cemal Abdullah in Istanbul, the birthplace.
